Twenty months have passed since dog shows were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And while that time seems to have flown by, the fact is we are quickly approaching the two-year anniversary of something we’d all like to forget.
When the shutdown began, we had time to reflect on the sport of purebred dogs. Everyone I know came to a new realization about just how passionate they are about purebred dogs and the competition associated with them. Many people, including me, prayed for shows to return quickly. During this downtime, our entire staff worked on current projects to keep our readers and viewers engaged. We also reviewed the things we were doing right and wrong, and we made plans for the future once things returned to normal.
I assumed that others, including AKC, were doing the same. Let’s face it, how often do you have a break from day to day activities that is long enough to really look at everything you do, then make changes? I really assumed AKC would look at the conformation side of their operation and consider changes to improve it. Specifically, I am talking about dog shows.
Before the pandemic happened, most agreed there were too many dog shows. Nearly everyone agreed that entries were declining because of the proliferation of shows. Consequently, the participation rate was declining, too. Everyone I respect said something needed to be done, or the sport, as we know it, was charting a course toward oblivion.
