By Tom Grabe

The growing list of canceled shows is distressing to anyone who loves the sport of purebred dogs. Every day seems to bring a bit more bad news. However, we are not here to talk about cancellations specifically. We are here to celebrate the valiant efforts of those trying their damnedest to make sure the show goes on!

As I write this column, the Learning Cluster in Guthrie, Oklahoma is finishing up. I have spoken to many who are there showing, judging and watching; and by all reports, it has been a success. I am told that everyone has been respectful of the rules put in place by Onofrio Dog Shows, and the safety of everyone attending was of utmost concern to those hosting the show.

This same weekend saw the Miami Valley Labrador Retriever Club host back to back specialty shows in Lima, Ohio. The superintendent for these shows was Executive Dog Shows. Again, the reports came in with everyone saying the shows were a resounding success.

Canine Chronicle TV reporter Deb Cooper interviewed attendees of both sets of shows. Luke & Rowan Baggenstos were in Oklahoma and Vicki Cushman and Nina Fetter talked to us from Ohio. They all sang the praises of the show committees, the superintendents and the volunteers who worked so hard to bring the first dog shows since mid-March to life.

These shows along with the upcoming shows in South Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, Washington and Pennsylvania are what I call ‘green shoots’. You know what I mean, those little wisps of green you see in dark, fertile land that signals the beginning of what will soon be full grown crops that will create a bountiful harvest. And anyone who has tried to grow something knows it isn’t always easy. It takes devotion, hard work and talent to grow those crops and bring them to market. So it goes with the trailblazers who held shows the last week of June.
