I am penning this article in two parts. The first part is being written in advance of my Westminster assignment; the second part: post-assignment.
I am certainly no newcomer to “The Garden.” I have been a spectator, an exhibitor, a steward, and a judge. I have attended the event 62 times out of the last 63 years.
Maybe it was because of my history associated with Sunny Shay and the Grandeur Kennels successes at Westminster–having had multiple Group wins, placements, and a BIS–that made the events more meaningful to me all these years.
Many have experienced “The Thrill of Victory… and The Agony of Defeat,” as is shared in any other major sporting competition. Whatever the resulting outcome, every year was unique unto itself. My breed used to hold their National every year in New York City on the weekend before the Garden. The entries at the National were always in the 200+ range. Many also entered at Westminster (or at least tried). Some years we had 100 Afghan Hounds competing.
