Copper storage disease in dogs—commonly referred to as copper-associated hepatopathy—is an increasingly recognized and complex liver disorder that has drawn significant attention in recent years. At its core, the disease involves the accumulation of excessive copper in the liver, eventually leading to inflammation, cellular damage, fibrosis, and in advanced cases, liver failure. While copper is an essential trace mineral necessary for normal physiological function, the margin between requirement and toxicity appears to be narrower than once believed.
Under normal conditions, a dog’s body carefully regulates copper. After ingestion, copper is absorbed in the intestines and transported to the liver, where it is either utilized for metabolic processes or excreted into bile for elimination. In dogs with copper-associated hepatopathy, this balance is disrupted. Either due to genetic defects, environmental factors, or a combination of both, copper begins to accumulate within hepatocytes. Over time, this accumulation generates oxidative stress, damaging liver cells and triggering chronic inflammation.
Historically, copper storage disease was primarily associated with inherited disorders in specific breeds. Bedlington Terriers were among the first in which a clear genetic mutation—affecting the COMMD1 gene—was identified as the cause of impaired copper excretion. Since then, similar abnormalities in copper metabolism have been observed in breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, and Cocker Spaniels. However, the modern understanding of the disease has expanded beyond purely genetic origins. Increasingly, veterinarians are recognizing that dogs without a known genetic predisposition may also develop dangerous levels of hepatic copper.
Much of this shift in understanding can be attributed to the work of Dr. Sharon Center and colleagues at Cornell University. Through a series of scientific publications and clinical observations, Dr. Center has highlighted a concerning trend: liver copper concentrations in dogs appear to be rising over time, even among breeds not traditionally considered at risk. Her research suggests that changes in pet food formulation—particularly the increased use of highly bioavailable copper sources such as copper sulfate and chelated copper—may be contributing to this trend.
This raises an important and often overlooked factor in the development of copper storage disease: diet.
