By Susan Winslow

On August 7, 2021 the world lost a dynamic woman who broke barriers, lived life to its fullest and was a fearless advocate for animal welfare. Carol Harris was a leading breeder of world-class Whippets and Italian Greyhounds and she was well-known throughout the breeding and show industry as a plain-spoken, honest advocate for excellence in both conformation and disposition.

Harris was born in New Jersey in 1928. Growing up in East Orange, her love of animals was encouraged and she became an avid dog lover and equestrienne. Harris loved the outdoors, and one of her favorite memories was going fishing with her neighbor, Babe Ruth. Her friend Sharon Sakson says, “Carol loved that memory. Babe liked going fishing with her because she was brave about putting the worms on the hook. They stayed friends and he attended her wedding.” Harris attended the prestigious Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut, married in 1945 and had three children, Wendy, Jeff, and Allison. Her love of animals led her to become involved in the breeding of and competiting with both dogs and horses. She focused her boundless energy on producing high quality animals, rising to a level of prominence that lasted over seventy years in the sport of purebred dogs. She owned the famous Rugged Lark, a two-time AQHA Superhorse and sire of two Superhorses. Her Thoroughbreds did well in racing, with her home bred Francie’s Hat taking second at the Kentucky Derby in 1968.
