A short while ago, a thread circulated on Facebook about being proud to be an AKC purebred dog breeder. I think it was a great talking point, however actions are far more important than words.
The sport of purebred dogs is in a state of serious crisis. More action is needed, action that reflects true love of the sport of purebred dogs, action that’s based on integrity in every activity.
Breed with integrity. Breed for preservation of breed type, health, and temperament. More than 15 years ago I was invited to be part of the American Boxer Club Health and Research Committee. At my first meeting, I was asked which, in my opinion, were the most serious health issues in the breed. I said the two most prevalent issues concerning Boxer health were ignorance and irresponsibility. Ignorance can be cured with education but irresponsibility is lethal.
Since then, huge scientific advances, such as the identification of crucial genetic markers, have positively impacted the breed. Many such advances came about only through funding from money raised by the American Boxer Charitable Foundation and channeled to research through the H&R committee under the competent leadership of Dr. Joyce Campbell and Dr. William Truesdale. Sadly, we still have those who would rather question the validity of science than properly select their breeding stock.
