The Scottish Terrier is one of five short-legged terriers originating in Scotland, along with the Skye Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and West Highland White Terrier. It was also called the Aberdeen Terrier, and nicknamed the “Diehard,” reflecting the breed’s toughness in the field.
We found thirty Scottish Terrier experts, most of whom were breeder-judges, to invite to take a survey on their breed’s priorities. Twenty-three agreed to do so. Seventeen surveys were returned by the deadline, although one did not prioritize either list completely.
The participants have been in the breed for over thirty-seven years on average. Those who were judges have been approved for nearly seventeen years on average. Several have judged the national specialty, and most have judged other Scottie specialties.

The survey included a list of breed characteristics taken from the Scottish Terrier AKC standard for the experts to rank from most to least important. Below is the list in sequence of the average of their rankings on the surveys, with 1 being the most important.
