This past month I was fortunate enough to attend a great group of all breed shows hosted by Terry-All Kennel Club as well as the The Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac. This show is the largest single-breed specialty in the world. It runs for nearly a week with over 1,000 Labradors competing for top prizes.

The dog world offers us vast contrasts in events, locations, entries, attendees, judges, vendors, and ambiance. Each is a unique experience. Terry-All Kennel Club in Brighton, Colorado and The Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac in Frederick, Maryland are perfect examples of the diversity we find with various dog shows. For many of the attendees at Terry-All, this was the first show many exhibitors had been able to enter since early 2020. Apparently, there was a nearby dog show six months previously, but many of those at Terry-All were not able to attend.

With unusually warm weather and high winds, the doors were wide open for everyone to enjoy the indoors and outdoors together. One big topic of conversation was the newly instituted Bred by Exhibitor Puppy and Bred by Exhibitor Adult classes. In most breeds, there were smaller numbers of dogs to judge in each class. An entry of one or two dogs per class was typical. Judges expressed opinions such as, “I did not realize the class was divided into Puppy and Adult now.” Others said, “It’s the club’s choice.” Exhibitors were not sure if they knew about the new division in the class. One Non-Sporting exhibitor related that her dog was the only one in the class and does not like to show by herself. Let’s give it some time and see how it develops. Were you aware of the new division?

With everyone busy visiting and catching up with one another, both the larger and smaller buildings were humming with activity. The vendors who were in the smaller building had a good weekend, too. The word was that there would be a wait until there were more local shows.

As is the case these days, several judges had to cancel last minute. Some of the other scheduled judges filled in and other local judges came to the rescue to help out. It was great to see Gay Dunlap who accompanied Christine Erickson when she filled in on Sunday.
