By Elaine J. Lessig

The month of March will be remembered as the time that brought our community from darkness to light. Sunny, warm days in both Southern California and Louisville set the stage for a much welcomed rebirth–a renaissance for our shows, if you will allow. The perfect pairing of two days of The Kennel Club of Beverly Hills all breed shows and a day full of specialties, prior to the all breed, set the stage for all who attended. Perhaps, the most noticeable change was no more mask mandates which gave a sense of freedom and relief for the Californians and participants from a variety of other states. The masks came off and the smiles, which we have genuinely missed, were in full view. A collaborative sigh of relief filled the show grounds in Pomona, California.

Heard around the rings: FREE AT LAST!!! This was something very genuine among all in attendance. Seeing faces for the first time in almost two years created lots of funny moments and some concerning ones, too. “Wow, you look fabulous! “and “I am so sorry for your troubles,” were phrases heard over and over again. Of course, another biggie that was probably repeated more than any other was, “I still have a lot of work to do. My Covid pounds have to go.”

Seen around the rings: GREAT DOGS! On the specialty day, one ring after another was filled with dogs of great quality. The Cairn ring was just one example of depth not seen in a long time. Judges had a plethora of possibilities. Exhibitors stood and sat around the ring every time the breed entered over the three days I was there. Then, of course, the aficionados and doyens of the breed enjoyed an evening together at the hotel restaurant with fun, frolic and bottomless adult beverages. I heard it went on well into the evening. Those Cairn folk know how to party!
