Who has a show in St. Paul, Minnesota the first week of January? Land O’ Lakes Kennel Club–headed by show chair, Jan Croft–takes no notice of the frigid temperatures outside. Instead, she provides a warm atmosphere for all the exhibitors, judges, spectators, officials, and all in attendance. Fourteen inches of snow decorated the immediate environment around the RiverCentre in downtown St. Paul. Snow? Who cares about the snow? Apparently, no one does. As we walked over to the show or went over in the hotel van, we encountered the exhibitors happily coming into the building with all their dog paraphernalia and the dogs. They enjoyed the warm, spacious grooming area downstairs next to the main exhibit halls and the smaller space upstairs in the Wilkins Auditorium where the smaller dogs were exhibited. All 40,000 square feet of grooming space was filled.
On Saturday the huge exhibition space was buzzing. Folks from all over the area came in throngs with their friends and families to see the dogs, watch the special events provided by the club, and enjoy the Meet the Breeds. There were so many spectators, getting the dogs to the ring on time required military precision. The atmosphere was electric for everyone in attendance. Cheering never stopped around the rings. Questions were asked and answered. New dogs were introduced to the judges. Some were very successful. I can easily say it was delightful to be there.
