By Sandy Weaver

There are 7.9 billion people on Planet Earth. 3.1 billion of them are on Facebook.

Let that sink in.

Well over a third of the people on this planet can potentially see what you post on Facebook, and while a search doesn’t reveal how many dog-show enthusiasts use Facebook–because of the way the algorithm puts associated things together–you can assume if you post dog-show-related information, the rest of the dog show world will be able to see it. That’s a lot of exposure, and a lot of power.

Use your power for good. And if you can’t do that, then at least think before you hit the “post” button. There are two really good reasons for you to be sure your social media posts don’t cross a line. One reason is you could be banned from participation at any level in AKC, and the other is that you could be the last straw that causes someone to try or succeed in killing themselves.

Online behavior is generally civil, interspersed with outbursts of idiocy. It’s the outbursts of idiocy that cause the problems, and sadly, Facebook and other forums make it easy for someone to hide behind a fake persona so they can anonymously harm other people. That harm is causing increasing problems, not just for those harmed, but also for those trying to enforce a level of civility and sportsmanship.
