You’d think entering the right class would be easy, but misunderstandings about class eligibility and when you must continue to show make up a large proportion of disallowed wins. Don’t let your win be one of them! How well do you know your class competition rules?
1. You’re listed as the sole breeder and owner of your dog. Can your spouse show it in BBE? What about your child or parent? No. At one time spouses were allowed to, but this is no longer true. Chapter 3 Section 8 says it “must be owned or co-owned by any of the breeders of record” and “The person handling the dog in this class must be a breeder of record and owner of record.”
2. You co-bred a dog that is now solely owned by the other co-breeder, who has entered it in BBE at an upcoming show. Entries have closed. Yesterday the co-breeder broke her leg. Can you quickly change the dog’s ownership to include you so you can show it in BBE? No. The dog must be entered under the name of the owner at the time entries closed.
3. You’re entered in BBE or NOHS. You want to use a runner to gait your dog. Is your dog still eligible for BBE if you do? No. According to AKC’s FAQ page: “As eligibility to exhibit in these classes is defined by the person handling the dog, an eligible individual must handle the dog through the completion of competition in the class. This includes those who have received accommodation from the AKC for assistance (such as a runner).” So only if the runner meets the class eligibility requirements as well can they assist you. Otherwise the win would be disallowed if this was reported.
