68 – August, 2023

By Wayne Cavanaugh

In the 61 days of this coming August and September, 416 Best in Shows will be awarded. There’s nothing unusual about those particular 61 days, they just happen to be the numbers for the next two months. Any eight- or nine-week period will give you a similar number of dog shows to attend. You’ll have 147 chances to win a Best In Show in August and 269 chances to win one in September. At more than a few of those 416 dog shows, you’ll only have to defeat 250 dogs to take home the set of Yeti cups.

During those 61 days, there are three days in August and four days in September when you’ll have no chance of winning because, well, there are no shows on those days. Rare, but it happens. On the other 53 days, the 416 top awards will be spread over Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. 416 times, the big rosettes will be presented while a dozen or so people watch from ringside while recording the judging for Facebook for the tenth day in a row or scrolling through TikTok.

On those seven days off in the next two months, you’ll have time to stop home, get the oil changed in your van, and maybe even let the dogs run around in the yard. But never mind, you’ll likely be using those days to drive to other shows. In fact, you might want to just sell your house, live full-time in a motorhome with the proceeds, and use the extra change for double and triple entry fees. I mean, what self-respecting exhibitor would only enter one show every day?

The late great Texas songwriter, Townes Van Zandt, summed it up beautifully in his song To Live Is to Fly:

Everything is not enough

And nothin’ is too much to bear.

Where you been is good and gone

All you keep is the getting there.

(and maybe some boxes of ribbons)
