A moment that could make it or break it. Recently, I was asked a question that has been stuck in the back of my mind for quite some time, “As a junior, what do you like to do before the judge makes their decision?” For me, I knew the answer right away–whether it is a local show or a big show. I love to hear the judge say, “Take your dog around and present them in the middle of the ring.” There is something about that sentence that has me thrilled! From the anticipation of watching the talented junior before you, to the judge giving you a nod signifying it’s your last chance to show the connection, knowledge, and work put into your dog. The “why?” is my favorite part of this question. It gives every team a time to shine, and for me, the keyword is “present,” which gives you the opportunity to do whatever makes your dog look best.
I will never forget the first time the judge gave us this instruction, and I remembered having a conversation with my dad. He told me about a time when he was showing his dog in Best in Show, and he found a perfect pocket of light in which to present his dog. I have always loved that story, moment, and the photo hanging in our house. I find myself looking up to it to this day. I see it as a moment that every team deserves to experience. The big moment! As a handler and their dog, you must learn the quirks and challenges–from training to seeing what will make your dog look the absolute best. The chance to show you know your breed from showcasing the head to hand stacking it.
