One hundred years ago Des Moines, Iowa went to the dogs. Champion dogs, that is. This coming September 6 and 7, will be our 100th year and 97th Show, which will be held at the Iowa State Fair Varied Industries Building.
There have been many changes over the years, adapting to hard times (the Great Depression and COVID), increased numbers of dog breeds, specialty breed competitions, and the coveted Best of Breed competition.
• In 1927, 2 years after our founding, the Catalog shows that it was held at the Coliseum. There were 266 entries and 80 dog breeds competing.
• Last year, in 2024, the Des Moines Kennel Club show was held at the Iowa State Fair Varied Industries Building and we had 901 entries one day, and 946 entries the next day. There were 186 breeds competing.
• Over the past one-hundred years, there were only three in which there was no show – 1930, 1931, and 2020.
