We all begin somewhere. For some, that place is standing in the ring judging dogs. It is not appealing to everyone, but for those of whom it is, the desire is undeniable. To satisfy that need requires every new judge to meet the requirements and face the challenges. Acquiring that first group can be the most daunting to those working through it. IMHO asked fellow judges to share some tips and offer their suggestions for judges who are taking those steps toward judging their first group. Whether their experiences are from long ago, more currently, or very new, you will be able to appreciate their advice.

Hiring fewer judges can have a negative impact on the schedule and cause the show to run later than it would with a couple more judges. Furthermore, there have been some judges who feel that they are being asked to do too much. They say that with their regular judging, and then being asked to judge non-regular groups as well–in some cases after judging 175 dogs and a regular group–they are exhausted. Once again, I think it is the responsibility of the hiring clubs to ask judges up front about the non-regular judging and if nothing is said, the judge should communicate what they are willing to do as well as what they consider to be too much.

I am just not good with public surprises. Perhaps, I am just one of those people who is made uncomfortable by them? It does not seem to matter whether it is going out for dinner only to show up at your own unexpected birthday celebration, or opening the door to find unexpected guests at dinnertime. I know how to be gracious. You would never see me any other way, but inside I go into a tizzy.

When Desmond Murphy surveyed the seven Group winners assembled under the lights in Morris & Essex’s Best In Show ring on October 6, he saw dogs of widely varying ages and experience. As he later noted, judges are used to seeing some very good dogs in the Best In Show ring—at a show like Morris & Essex, you expect to find some super dogs. And that is just what he found.

The primary purpose of studying genetics is to understand the inheritance of any given trait or characteristic, so that one may plan breedings intelligently and, through the application of the principals learned, eliminate certain faults. These principals, once understood, may be applied to specific traits and characteristics to the benefit of your breed in general and your line in particular.
