I have had numerous conversations with fellow fanciers about the judging approval process that has been changed over the years. Aspiring judges consistently discuss the difficulty and expense of the current process.
The analogy that sticks in my head is it takes 9 years to become a physician, and the process to become an AKC multiple group judge can take just as long. We have lost many beloved all-arounders over the last few years, and as a result putting a judging panel together for a dog show is challenging. While I believe the AKC is trying to address the shortage of multiple group, or all-around judges, fanciers have a responsibility to do their part and assist aspiring judges to complete the mentorship requirements included in the process.
Over the years I have welcomed the opportunity to mentor aspiring judges in my breed. I have had varied experiences with the many mentoring sessions I have hosted. On the positive side, I have met with several individuals who came to the session fully prepared. They read the breed standard and did their homework. It is a pleasure to spend time with people who take mentorship seriously. It is not difficult to determine if the individual I am speaking with is there to learn, or simply wants their form signed. On the other hand, I have experienced many that have come to me at a show, form in hand, and asked me to “just sign the form”. My answer is, ‘No’.
I sincerely believe that our obligation to the sport of purebred dogs is to maintain the integrity of this portion of the judges’ approval process. Rubber stamping a form without spending the time to ensure you have shared knowledge of your breed with that person, and confirming they have a thorough understanding of your breed is, in my opinion, a disservice to the breed and the sport.
While I am discussing the topic of judging, Tom’s August issue Publisher’s Comments https://bt.e-ditionsbyfry.com/publication/?i=868227&p=12&view=issueViewer asks a very good question: Who would you trust to buy a dog for you? I am going to take that one step farther: Would you show to a judge who you would not ask to buy a dog for you? A well-respected judge had the following advice:
“Don’t fall in love with a judge just because they like your dog – ask yourself if you would let them buy a dog for you!”
This past week, the hard-working volunteers of the Keystone Cluster held their shows at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center in Lebanon, PA. Once again, the cluster did not disappoint. Fanciers enjoyed another terrific fundraising evening with one of the best raffles of the year shared with great times amongst friends. Led by AKC judges Charlie Olvis and Liz Muthard, this cluster continues to get better and better! Stay tuned for the results of this year’s fundraising activities.
I was deeply saddened to hear the sport has lost another long-time, dedicated handler and supporter. Rick Baggenstos passed away on August 3, 2026. Rick was a devoted fancier, dedicating most of his life to the sport of purebred dogs. He earned the respect and friendship of countless fanciers and was known for his kindness and mentorship. He will be remembered for the lasting influence he had on his family in the sport. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Our sincere condolences to Dinah, John, Jen, Luke, Rowan and the rest of the Baggenstos family at this difficult time.
Happy Anniversary to Tony Vacha and Courtney Kniola. It is hard to believe that you lovebirds have been married for nine years! Best wishes for continued happiness together!
