Welcome To Our New Online Home

Welcome

Welcome to our new online home at www.caninechronicle.com. Our address is the same but, as you can see, everything else has changed…dramatically. In Defense of Judges

dunlapAUG_2012

August 2012 By Gay Dunlap Whether from the ranks of breeder or handler, as judges, we were either born into the fancy, some perhaps third or fourth generation, or we began the journey by first falling in love with an adorable dog. If it was a purebred dog and registered with the AKC, we might […]

A Certain Comfort Zone

GMJ_AUGtitle_2012

August, 2012 by Dr. Gareth Morgan-Jones   In show after show it is oftentimes rather obvious that there are judges, particularly some of the newer ones, out there who are operating well outside their comfort zone and, as a result, are not always performing in what one might choose to call a fully satisfactory and […]

Parson John (Jack) Russell and the Jack Russell Terrier

horterAUG_2012

August 2012 by Chris Robinson When you decide to take your sporting dog into the field, there is only one rule that it is absolutely essential to engrave upon your brain: Always expect the unexpected. Hounds Toplines & Underlines, Part 2

formanAUG_2012

August 2012 by Lisa Dubé Forman In Part One of this article we discussed the greyhound and its genre breeds. I emphasized the importance of their having flexible, curvaceous toplines. Further, the amalgamation of length, shape and curvature of vertebrae in the spinal column, with the hard, smooth muscling encapsulating and supporting the loin area, […]

The Judges View :: Dr. Edna “Midge” Martin

EdnaMartin

August 2012 by Kimberly Silva Garrett 1. What made you decide to become a judge?  I love it! I believe it’s a continuation of the learning experience. You can put all you’ve learned to the test and continue learning. The world looks very different in the middle of the ring than being an exhibitor or […]

Helpful Hints For Juniors

givensAUG_2012

August 2012 By William Given I SPEND TIME WATCHING PROFESSIONAL HANDLERS. Professional handlers are not necessarily better handlers than breeder- or owner-handlers but because they show more dogs at many more shows they have become much more consistent in their presentation of client dogs in the ring. They make fewer handling errors. Watch with a […]

Hounds – Toplines & Underlines

lead photo

It is elementary that shape, others prefer the word silhouette, nearly always defines breed type in our hounds. My intent is not to cover each of the hound group’s 27 breeds. Rather, I have highlighted breeds to illustrate essential elements of shape. The hound group species are diversified into sight and scenthounds and within the sighthound classification, a more specific genre exists being the Greyhound and greyhound-like breeds. I will discuss this exclusive cast first as it is very important to me and, hereafter, I will usually refer to them as genre.
