Several recent experiences occurred causing me to review and change my mind about things that were always considered to be true. It all happened because of three well-known problems that were being included in a new book I was writing. My research uncovered information that was contrary to some of the long-accepted truths that had been told and accepted by breeders in the dog world. These events reminded that when the information you have seems to be overwhelming and convincing, it can still be wrong. TheNorwegian Elkhound has been called the “Dog of the Vikings,” but has been around for thousands of years, well before the Vikings. Elkhounds were used in rural Norway as watch dogs, flock guardians, and for tracking large game, such as moose and bear. His AKC name is a mistranslation of “Norske Elghund.” “Elg” is “moose”, not “elk,” and hund is “dog.” He might have been named Norwegian Moose Dog.

Today, this may not be common knowledge, but dog shows actually predate the establishment of the first kennel clubs. History recognizes an 1859 Setter and Pointer show in Newcastle upon Tyne as the first ever dog show (its American coequal was the Illinois Show for Setters and Pointers in 1874), prior to which dog competitions of various sorts had been held in pubs and gentlemen’s clubs throughout Great Britain. It was conceded that to bring order out of the sudden and chaotic growth of competitive dog exhibitions, the establishment of kennel clubs as governing bodies was imperative.
