158 – October, 2026

By Elaine Lessig

How can I forget? I simply can’t. It’s been twenty-five years since the World Trade Center in New York City was destroyed. I saw it! By happenstance I walked into my house just before the event. On a beautiful cool Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, with a totally clear blue sky, and buoyant air, I left the house to get in some miles around the neighborhood. My usual goal was to stay out for anywhere between five to seven miles before going home. On that particular day, I cut it short. I had an important appointment about an hour from home. Getting showered and dressed would take up more time.

When I walked into the house, the radio was blaring away, as usual. I keep it on for the dogs. Next, I needed to get them outside into the courtyard until I left. Taking a quick shower, jumping into my clothes, and putting my keys, wallet, and phone in my bag was the last thing I did before bringing the dogs back into the house. Just as I got them settled, an alert came screeching from the radio. It was broadcast from the newsroom of WOR in New York City. The newsman said, “It appears an airplane has hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center.” Quickly, I turned on the TV in the kitchen. There, right before my eyes, in full sight, was black smoke and red flames pouring out of the North Tower. The time on the kitchen clock was 8:55 AM Eastern Daylight Time. My appointment was 10 AM.

“What should I do?” I asked myself. Then, unbelievably the South Tower was struck. The time was 9:02 AM. Suddenly the realization hit me. My husband would have gone through the World Trade Center complex, with the subway and train stations underneath, adjacent to the center. That was his route when he got off the bus which brought him into the city from New Jersey. Next he took the subway to Brooklyn Hospital where he worked. Instantly, I grabbed my phone and tried to reach him. By that time, according to the media, all communications in the area had ceased. Each glance at the TV showed more and more destruction–and horror. Little did I know; soon both towers would fall.
