We hear about it every summer…dogs left in a vehicle with every precaution, yet somehow, cooling failed, dogs died, and owners and handlers, already grief-stricken, were vilified.

When AKC announced its policy regarding dogs left in vehicles, it caused a huge furor. Many people had spent a small fortune outfitting their rigs with multiple air-conditioners, fans, and temperature monitors, only to be told they must now keep their windows open when they’re not in sight. It seemed like a low-tech (and poorly defined) solution that wasn’t needed and would, in many cases, counteract all the cooling tech in place.

While every single person at a show agrees dog safety absolutely comes first, the truth is all technology can fail. We’ve all heard the incredibly tragic stories of owners who didn’t know their car would turn off, or their generator could flip a circuit breaker, or their air-conditioner would malfunction, or the electricity would go out. In too many of these cases, had the person known more about what could go wrong, they could have prevented it. In my opinion, basic cooling tech is something that every aspiring handler should learn–and owner-handlers as well.
