Over the past year, there have been several tragedies where dogs have died due to the negligence of those responsible for their safety and care. Some were in the possession of professional handlers while others were in the possession of their owners.
Most likely, these tragic deaths were preventable. There is no excuse for what happened to these dogs. They should all still be with their loving families today–sleeping in their beds, running around their yards, and spreading joy to those around them. The heartache felt by those who loved them is still palpable today, and their memories are kept alive through websites and foundations that tell their story and advocate for change.
These events have led people to question AKC’s disciplinary policies, and the time it takes to deal with those responsible for these dogs’ deaths. This is not something new.?Similar occurrences have led to the same questions in the past. All of this makes me wonder if AKC needs to reevaluate the current disciplinary system and change the way they deal with those who have egregrious offenses, i.e. the death or severe injury of an animal or person, physical assault of an animal or person, or other similar actions. Should they face immediate suspension of some or all privileges while AKC investigates the alleged offense?
