Those words may sound simple, but within the dog fancy they carry a weight many of us understand all too well.

Every breed we admire today, every line we build upon, every beautiful dog we see under the lights of a show hall exists because of breeders who quietly gave decades of their lives to the work. Not years, but decades. Generations of dogs carefully planned, studied, evaluated, and loved. Successes celebrated. Failures absorbed. Lessons learned.

Yet too often, their contributions pass without acknowledgment.

Breeders are the foundation of the sport. Without them there are no breeds, no pedigrees, no future generations to evaluate–and ultimately no shows. The American Kennel Club exists because breeders dedicate themselves to preserving and improving the animals entrusted to them.

Recognition costs nothing. A word of appreciation. A nod to the past. A reminder that someone’s work mattered. But silence has a price.
