There was a time, spoken of in catalogs, and old Gazette articles, when the fancy was shaped by great houses. In those days, AKC kennels stood like living archives, each preserving a singular vision of type, temperament, and purpose. Within those walls, generations of dogs were planned with the kind of intention that built not just litters, but legacies.
Back then, established lines matured under the stewardship of one household. A breeder might carry a family of dogs from a foundation bitch through six or seven generations. Outcrosses were carefully chosen, but the heart of the line stayed rooted, tended by eyes trained through years of ringside observation.
But the world that supported those grand kennels and catteries has changed.
The rising costs of living, the tightening restrictions of pending animal legislation, and the shrinking pool of new exhibitors have reshaped the landscape. The fancy is aging. And as fewer young hands step forward to apprentice, many of the once-great houses stand quiet.
