When you sit and watch Groups, do you pay attention to the basics of presentation? How the dog is presented is the first impression the judge gets, and often it’s not a great impression.

This isn’t about what the handler is doing in the ring. This is about the preparation before stepping into the ring. Presentation begins with breed-specific knowledge, grooming, and conditioning.

Every breed has an ideal “look.” What is the look that your breed is supposed to have? You’ll find clues in the Standard—words like square, sleek, elegant, cottony, and sturdy all describe what the judge needs to see as a first impression.

When the judge looks at your dog, are the words in the Standard part of the picture? Here’s how to make sure they are.
