When I first started showing dogs, I heard the same phrase more often than I could count.

“You need to pay your dues.”

It was usually delivered with a knowing smile. Sometimes kindly, sometimes less so. The message rarely changed. Success in this sport would come slowly, and newcomers were expected to learn their place.

For a long time, I assumed that meant losing for a while. Maybe years. Maybe longer.

Today, I still hear those words, and I often find myself wondering what they actually mean.
