At some point, many people who enter the dog show world without history or connections ask themselves: do I really belong here?
?It is not something we often say out loud. Dog shows can feel like a world shaped by generations, where confidence appears to come more easily to some than others. For those who arrive later, simply because they loved dogs and stayed long enough to become serious about the sport, legitimacy can feel uncertain even after years of work. You learn the rules, you study the breed or breeds, you put in the effort, and still there can be the sense that everyone else understands something you do not.
I held on to that feeling longer than I expected.
At my first Westminster, I was grateful for the opportunity, but I also felt like an observer in a space that represents the highest level of the sport. Surrounded by accomplished handlers and established breeders, it was easy to assume that confidence came from history or reputation rather than effort. It felt like something you either had or did not.
