After reading Tom Grabe’s insightful From the Publisher editorial on the direction of local kennel clubs, I was inspired to write this article. This is, in my view, such an important subject that echoes all around the dog fancy.

It is crucial that new members of the clubs be informed about the structure of a club and how it functions to put on shows and other events necessary to the club’s core mission.

Years ago, younger fanciers interested in a particular breed and dog shows were keen just to be around those who ran the club and worked to put on the shows. Even attending the meetings was something to be looked forward to and enjoyed! Recalling those days, starting about age ten, I happily attended specialty club meetings. I was encouraged, welcomed, and transported by a mentor who spotted me with my dog in an obedience class and gave me her card (she had the breed I was working with in the class). That club had meetings at all kinds of locations–member homes, in a city warehouse, in a library conference room, at a religious group hall, in the backroom of a bar, and at a conference room at a university veterinary school! It was so interesting, and information was rapidly absorbed!
