Dr. Stephen R. Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly-Effective People, taught leaders to “put first things first.” Or, as he put it more memorably: The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.
For a nonprofit organization, the “main thing” is expressed in its mission statement—the reason it exists in the first place. For a for-profit entity, the main thing is to make money; for a nonprofit, it’s to serve a cause.
The mission of the American Kennel Club (AKC) is clear: the Club is “Dedicated to upholding the integrity of its Registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs, and breeding for type and function.” The mission also includes advancing canine health, advocating for purebred dogs as family companions, and defending the rights of dog owners.
Keep that mission in mind as we look at AKC’s latest decision.
