By Matthew G. Stroud

That’s the word breeders use. Not perfect. Not guaranteed. Just promising.

But by the time it reaches a hopeful new owner, it often sounds like something else entirely: You’re about to win.

And when things don’t go as expected – if the dog hits an awkward stage, the movement shifts, the wins stall out or never quite come together – frustration sets in. The owner starts second-guessing. The breeder goes quiet. Trust erodes.

The issue isn’t intent. It’s communication.

Or more specifically – the lack of clear, mutual expectations around how breeders and owners should stay in touch after the puppy goes home.

I’ve worked in communications for over 20 years, and I’ve shown a Silver Grand Champion and competed at Westminster. Like many exhibitors, I’ve grown with each dog – not just in the ring, but in how I stay connected with the breeder.

Early on, it’s hard to know what warrants a message. Do you text every time the puppy picks up a point? Ask before entering a show? Share every ring photo or judge’s comment?
