Tradition underpins our sport. We are so fortunate to love a sport that allows us time with mentors and friends, and our beloved pets. Showing dogs is a lifetime sport: We have kindergarten students in the ring with grandparents; and families who have blessed us with multiple generations of humans as well as their dogs.

A couple of the true high-water marks of tradition in our sport are coming up this Fall – Morris & Essex on October 1st, held only once every five years; and Montgomery County KC for Terriers on October 5th. Between them will be the Hatboro and Devon shows. It’s a fitting fall line-up ahead of the 150th Anniversary show of the Westminster Kennel Club in February.

In conjunction with Morris & Essex, a tremendous number of local and national breed clubs are holding specialties and supported entries; including many of our rare breeds. Our focus breed for this month, the English Foxhound, will be holding their National Specialty at M&E on October 1st. I hope people will take the time to go see this rare breed and spend some time with them. For this article, we spoke with Kevin Shupenia of Jackpot and Kingsbury hounds, and with Toni Koerber of Monocacy Bend.

Kevin Shupenia breeds English Foxhounds and Harriers under the Kingsbury prefix, as well as Beagles under the Jackpot kennel name. With his Foxhounds, Kevin works extensively with the Princess Anne Hunt in Virginia, and has the opportunity to run his puppies with their pack for periods of time. He also works with the Hunt to import English Foxhounds.
