The title is a tad sensational, but I wanted to catch your attention. I’m aware this is a totally ludicrous title, and that it has no bearing on truth–but indulge me. My entire premise for this idea came from a hypothetical social experiment.
What if I walked into a local Tim Hortons or Starbucks and found a student diligently doing their homework? I beg forgiveness for intruding and ask if they would do something for me. In my dream, I hand them a standard for the sporting group and ask them to study it for a couple of days. I would then return and ask them to take a test. I’m sure it would be easy to convince today’s young people to study for a couple of days and also take a test. It could happen…
Anyway, this hypothetical student agrees, and in two days I return with a copy of our judging test for the sporting group–minus the rules and regulations part. We could save that for another day. I’m sure they would be willing to take it, too. To continue, our student sits down and takes the written test. Now keep in mind, most young students who are still in high school, and in their late teens, have become quite adept at taking tests.
So, how do you think they would do on this test? Would they pass? I think they would pass it with flying colors. If so, they passed it without ever seeing an Irish Setter–or any breed in the Sporting group for that matter. Can they now judge? Yes. Would their lack of hands-on experience leave them mystified? Another yes.
