The 149th Westminster Kennel Club dog show is history; and to say it was a success would be a massive understatement if crowd sentiment is a barometer.
Everyone I spoke to over the weekend and during the daytime and nighttime judging raved about this year’s event. Whether it was the location of the show, the organization of the event, or the overall vibe–the comments ranged from positive to excited.
The discussion leading into this year’s show was all about its return to Manhattan and Madison Square Garden. The anticipation of the return to New York City did not disappoint. Yes, the Pennsylvania is now an empty lot waiting for a new, more contemporary replacement. The Stewart is no longer welcoming guests and some of the restaurants we all remember from a decade ago are now underneath the foundation of Hudson Yards–either gone or relocated somewhere else we’ll never visit.
The Piers have been replaced by the Javits Center. Talk about an upgrade! Gone is the 20-90-minute ride (depending on the time of day) across town to Piers 92 & 94. I have to admit that I’ll miss seeing the Intrepid Museum during that commute, but not much else.
