By Elaine Lessig

There come times in our lives when we have the responsibility to take a good look at where we are, where we have been, and where we should be going. It is a life challenge, one we all need to confront at sometime. Here’s one. Do you remember when your entire family was in a tizzy because Grandpa Jim, at age 92, was still driving? Each family member knew that the time to take away the keys–and ultimately the car–was long overdue. The problem became a recalcitrant Grandpa Jim who was resolute. With his clear mind, independent living situation, and need to be in charge, he unfortunately chose to overlook his failing eyesight, sciatica, and slow reaction time. “No way, no way!” he declared with the same determination he expressed over his lifetime. If there was a subject he did not want to discuss, he simply ignored it. Fortunately, his longtime family physician prevailed. Now Grandpa Jim’s car is still in the family. Driven by his great, great grandson, Wesly, Grandpa Jim still gets to go to his favorite places. The problem is solved.

In Dogdom, there are many similar situations which we need to address that require our serious attention. Our dogs do not live forever. When we breed or acquire a dog, there is an understanding that, most likely, we are going to outlive our dogs. Our life spans a much longer life expectancy than the dog’s ever will. However, we understand that as the dogs age, so do we. How many of us are willing to plan for that day when our dogs survive us? Do we have a will which legally provides for their health, welfare, and safety? Is there a written plan in place for interim placement until the dogs move on to their new homes? Have family, friends, and vets been apprised of your plan? Share that information with them to be certain.
