The Westminster Kennel Club’s annual dog show has proven that it can “make it” in New York for well over a hundred years; weathering two world wars and a pandemic, among other crises. So it’s with a light touch that I mention that this year, the show’s 148th, “New York” will once again mean the borough of Queens. The show will be held May 12-14 at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
I talked with Kennel Club President Donald Sturz about this year’s show. First, though, I got a proud parent’s update on Sturz’s latest canine companion, Fiona, a dazzling platinum Pekinese acquired from David Fitzpatrick:
“She finished her championship in three shows. Her tail is always wagging, and you know, she just struts around the ring all full of herself.”
So now she is Ch. Pequest Fiona, from Fitzpatrick’s winning line. Her sire is Ch. Pequest Fortune Cookie and her dam is Pequest Parti Time. And let’s not forget her uncle, Ch. Pequest Wasabi, Westminster’s 2021 Best in Show winner.
Sturz describes her as “sassy and smart,” and already a seasoned traveler and office mate. “She has totally enchanted and enthralled me.”
Just the kind of person you want waiting at home for you when you have a job as challenging as Sturz’s.
