When you watch a great show dog-handler team, what do you see?

Maybe you see a gorgeous free stack and wish you and your dog could do that.

Maybe you see smooth, effortless sidegait or a flawless down-and-back and wish you and your dog could do that.

Maybe you see a confident team you can’t take your eyes off and wish you and your dog looked like that.

What you may not see is the one basic, fundamental skill that the dog and handler have perfected that is the foundation for everything else–the handler has earned the dog’s focus.

If you Google “what is the most important thing to teach your dog” you’ll get 170,000,000 results in 0.49 seconds. You’ll get lots of opinions about the most important things to teach your dog–“come” and “sit” are cited most often. In the results are a lot of lists, proclaiming that “come, sit, stay, off, leave it, heel, and down” are the most important things to teach your dog. Those are great skills, and those pages miss the mark on the most important skill.
