I bet you didn’t know that there are reams of booklets, links, and printed pages that cover every conceivable detail about all things AKC. If you’re a new owner of an AKC-registered dog, I know you’re so proud that you have “Papers” on “Fido.” I hope you have figured out that a pedigree listing their heritage is not the “papers” you really want and need. I’ll take a leap of faith and assume the breeder you bought your dog from either sat with you and had you sign the “blue slip” from the litter registration or at least provided you with it to send in on your own; and it included their signature as “breeder(s) of record”. In this techie era, one can do it online as well…but I do know that verifiable signatures are still required, and you have to choose a name for your new pup.
There are some quirky details you should know about. It might sound silly, but there is weight to how/who is listed as the owner of a dog if more than one personwants to be recorded on the official papers. God forbid something contentious arises like a divorce or the need to prove ownership in a rescue or co-owner dispute. Should it ever involve law enforcement, they will err in favor of the first owner listed–if there is no contractual documentation to establish who is the “primary” owner. Let’s hope your relationship with your breeder is a close and supportive one and something like this never occurs.
Let’s move on to “baby naming”. At one time the registered name was limited to 25 letters, but now for a few extra bucks…you can get a bit more creative and exceed that number. There is a good chance the breeder will require their kennel name to be part of the registration, and that is always fine. Their might be specific instructions that it (the kennel name) comes first on the papers; and if they have an AKC Registered Kennel Prefix, that is expected. Maybe that’s why they call it a kennel PREFIX!
