Aces can’t be returned. They’re brilliant and beautiful serves, a small furry orb shot from a racket at a rate of speed that seems unimaginable. In 2021, Oscar Otte from Germany set the record for the fastest ace in US Open history at a blazing 151 MPH. It traveled right through the center of what would become the Best In Show ring on May 9th, 2023. Perfection. Timing. Dedication. Hard work. This year, Westminster served its own ace at the same great place. Matching adjectives apply.
The 147th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, held for the first time at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, was a series of unstoppable aces. Every stroke was polished and efficient. Everyone who walked through the storied gates, watched on television or on-line streaming, experienced the historic look and feel of Westminster in all of its glory. Details built upon details.
Last year at Lyndhurst, the minute the big ribbon was handed out, the sport began another favorite pastime–speculating where this year’s event would be held. Was it going back to Madison Square Garden, the Javitz Center, Lyndhurst, or a myriad of other persistent guesses? Where and when will it be held? Once the new venue at USTA National Tennis Center was announced, the next round of speculation began.
