Sometime around 1992, I was watching David Letterman launch his Top Ten List into the media with full regalia–and they loved it. At the time, I was AKC Vice President of Communications and always looking for ways to get some positive press for purebred dogs. A few of us kicked it around at the office and came up with a list. We called it the “Top Ten Most Popular Breeds” and we believed it! Letterman is focusing more on his Top Ten Beard list these days, but every March, the AKC list still hits the airwaves … and it is fun! Even if it’s not actually the list of America’s Most Popular Breeds. Really. It’s not.
The truth is that no one knows which breeds are the most popular. We just know how many dogs, separated by breed, register with AKC. No harm, no foul I suppose–maybe just an over-zealous title.
As I’ve previously mentioned, after moving to the Midwest from a lifetime on the East Coast, I noticed a bigger picture of the purebred dog world outside of AKC. There is no doubt that AKC does and always will be the best and biggest single source of registrations for purebred dogs in America. However, most purebred dogs aren’t registered anywhere–most people just want a pet. It’s not that they dislike papers, it just doesn’t mean as much to them as it does to us anymore.
