I recently had the chance to peruse some past issues of CC and came across a terrific interview with Judge Mr. Edd Bivin on page 154 of the November/December 2012 issue. In this article, Mr. Bivin discusses having first-time exhibitors in his ring. Quoting from the article, “He asks them to look around, and reminds them that everyone at the show had a first time, telling them not to miss ‘the thrill and enjoyment of the moment’.”

I remember my first show like it was yesterday. I remember walking around, dog in tow, looking for a place to put my crate and set up my table and hoping, just hoping someone would smile or say a kind word.

I remember the highlights of all the dumb mistakes I made in the ring. I particularly remember the kind strangers who helped me overcome those mistakes. Some are my good friends to this day, and some have passed away.

One particular memory I have is being in the group for the first time with a burning desire to just make the cut. Then, once that goal was achieved, I immediately hoped for a ribbon of any color. Finally, the ribbons came, then that coveted group first. It seems I didn’t even have time to cherish that win as my thoughts turned to Best in Show, and the fact that I really wanted that ultimate prize.
