Chapter 1
It took me a long time to get started on this story. It just seems like I always find something else to do. Resistance in action. My subconscious mind, or my muse–if you believe in that stuff–telling me I had better get started before my memory decided to store it on my cloud. Which is the same as my phone; never to be seen or heard from again.
I have always wanted to write a book about dog handling, not just the how or how not to. So I’ve decided to tell you how I learned some lessons on the art. There was no textbook, no course I could take. It all came from experience. Now, I don’t think we all can learn just from life lessons. There needs to be some natural ability, at least to get started. I’m an avid Stephen King fan and one of my favorites is his nonfiction work “On Writing”. I have read it several times, and I even have it on audio for those long drives. The version I have is narrated by the author, which is even better. You hear the words coming straight from his mouth, so when he gets excited about what he is reading, you can tell it’s genuine. I guess I’m getting a bit off track but it’s heading in the right direction. You see, I got this idea from Stephen King. In his book, he tries to teach his reader all kinds of lessons on writing, but he does it with stories. The same stories helped him learn these lessons. So I’m going to try to do the same. I’m going to try to teach you how I learned to be not only a better handler but, I’m hoping, a better dog person.
Now, where to begin? Do I go right back to my first dog show, or do I jump ahead to a moment of great significance? That way, maybe I can keep the reader’s attention. But I will delve into the beginning at some point, as that is where the passion took root. For now, August of 2011 will be the starting point.
