AKC Museum of the Dog Celebrates 40th Anniversary with New Exhibit & Dog Parade

In celebration of its anniversary, the AKC Museum of the Dog is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit, “The AKC Museum of the Dog at 40: And the Collectors Who Made It.” This exhibition will bring into focus several of  the collectors whose donations had a profound impact on shaping the museum’s permanent collection and where it stands today. The exhibit opens Wednesday, September 14th.

Pieces include “Bob” by George Earl (donated by Frank Sabella), “Domestic Scene” by Trood (donated by Marie Moore), “Salukis” by James Ward and “Deerhound and Mastiff” by Sir Edwin Landseer (both donated by Cynthia Wood).

“Inspired by the passions of some of our most generous donors, we are excited to share his celebration of our history with our Members and visitors,” says Executive Director Deborah Kasindorf. “As we reach this anniversary milestone, we invite all dog lovers to experience the unique gem that is the AKC Museum of the Dog.”

Created in 1982, it was originally located in the New York Life Building on Madison Avenue, before moving to St. Louis, Missouri, where it thrived for over thirty years. In 2019, the Museum of the Dog returned to its roots, reuniting with the AKC Headquarters in New York City at 101 Park Avenue. As the finest collection of dog art in the world, the collection has grown to contain over 1,700 paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics over the past 40 years, largely due to the generosity of collectors.

“While the exhibition will look at some of the major donors who helped establish and shape the collection, it’s important to realize that every donation, however large or small, is equally treasured,” said Adjunct Curator Alan Fausel. “It is, after all, the collection that makes the museum.”

A Press Preview will take place on Monday, September 12th from 9:00am – 11:00am. Members of the press are welcome and invited to RSVP and see the gallery firsthand before the public.

Additionally, on Wednesday September 14th, the Museum will be hosting a Member Preview of the exhibition from 10am – 11am prior to the public opening, with extended shop hours for Members to enjoy their discounts during the preview and a tour given by Alan Fausel. More information can be found here.

Throughout the installation, there will be additional events, including the highly anticipated dog parade in Bryant Park celebrating the Museum’s 40th Anniversary. Paws on Parade will take place on Saturday, September 24th from 12:00pm to 1:30pm. The event is free but registration is required. Dog owners and dog lovers alike will enjoy this opportunity to socialize with other canine enthusiasts from throughout the city.

Other events will take place throughout the month of September, including two Furry Friday events and a K9 Officers and Handlers Tribute. For more information on Museum events, please visit our events calendar.
