On Tuesday June 21, Evalyn Gregory glided into the Group ring at the Westminster Kennel Club’s elegant pop-up—the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown–to judge the Non-Sporting Group. She was wearing an elegant, silver-threaded dress that conjured up the former Gould mansion’s swanky past; could have passed muster on the Titanic (with a happier outcome); and certainly suited someone whose family had once owned the Hope diamond (this comes up in a lot of newspaper articles, but Gregory never mentions it.)

My colleague Joan Harrigan shared with you Gregory’s comments on her choices that night in the August issue of CC. But after meeting her earlier in June during a site survey of the estate, I wanted to get to know her better, and thought that our readers would, too.

At Lyndhurst, Gregory spoke with animation about her forthcoming debut as a Group judge:

“I’m not only quite excited, but I’m so honored. It’s a dream come true to be part of the tradition of my family, for I’m a second generation judge.”

Gregory’s parents were AKC judging legend Joe Gregory, and Mamie Spears Reynolds Gregory, both active as handlers and breeders. I asked what her first memory of a dog show was, and got two answers. One is clearly a treasured Gregory family shaggy dog story:

“Well, as my mom and dad would say, I was already at [shows] as a baby. And they would put me in a crate, close the door. And they would go and show.”

Gregory clearly loves telling this story, but admits with a twinkle “that I wish I could remember those moments, because I think that would be a really cool thing.”

Her first actual memory is almost as cool:
