It seems some Stafford enthusiasts believe that this breed is a gift from the heavens; it’s not subject to the same laws of structure, physics, and gravity that all other canines are. I am sure many at AKC would probably disagree. The SBT is a dog, first and foremost, that happens to be called a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. And yes, the Stafford does fall under the rules for canine structure, especially when it is stated clearly in the standard.
Now, I do not claim to be an expert in structure and movement, but I do understand the basics of both. I tend to use more of a common-sense approach. That being said, I have contacted multiple experts on both subjects. According to Stephanie Seabrook Hedgepath, “In any discussion concerning the dog’s forequarters, much of the emphasis is placed on the scapula (shoulder blade). The positioning on the chest and the degree of layback and proper lay-on of the scapula, does much to determine the forward reach of the canine front leg.”
