Imagine for a few moments – it’s June 1920 and you’re invited to Lyndhurst Mansion for the day to visit with Helen Gould, a beloved philanthropist, and her railroad executive husband, Finley J. Shepard. The Shepards open up the house each summer and it’s just filled with all the best people, and their children, dogs and so much fun.

It will probably take a day’s travel for you to get to the beautiful mansion on the Hudson River but everyone is excited about traveling by automobile these days although gasoline is about 20 cents a gallon.

And, don’t forget, the average person is earning about $3,000 per year so 20 cents per gallon may be pricey for the average person…but, you are traveling to visit your friends at Lyndhurst, and you probably have no need for counting pennies. In fact, your personal driver was probably driving the car, which was quite conceivably a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Phaeton Tourer.

The Shepards loved dogs as did nearly everyone who ever inhabited Lyndhurst over the years, and you’re bringing the perfect little hostess gift with you: a popular little book by Jean A. Bishop: Just Dogs: Dog Poems for Everyone.

Since it’s going to be quite a few hours…and they’ll never know…let’s enjoy breezing through the book as we breeze up the Hudson River Valley’s winding roads, shall we?
