It seems you humans just do not appreciate the vulnerabilities of being a dog. You abuse and malign our reputation each and every time you sarcastically suggest that the world has ‘gone to the dogs’ or that this is a ‘dog-eat-dog world’. Truth be told, if we eat it, we are pretty satisfied with our diet, and it would never include one of our own. This idiom is generally used to describe a situation in which people will do anything to be successful, even if what they do harms other people. We are all quite happy for the success another dog achieves.
We have heard it said that the no-good brother-in-law is ‘lazy as a dog’, but really, why insult us? Whether it be guiding the blind, being the listening ear for someone who cannot hear, or doing police work in a wide variety of roles, we appreciate having a good job. Some of us enjoy work in the area of search and rescue, while some of us excel in the field of therapy as certified comforters, and some work much closer to home gently herding the children in the back yard. We are always ready to go to work, we are never late, and we never shirk our responsibilities.
We are, also, always ready to go for a walk, whether one mile or two. It does not matter to us, we are good for it, even if we have to pull you up the hill the last quarter mile. On occasion, you even state you would enjoy the easy, carefree life of a dog. Again, you simply do not understand the perils of being a dog.
We allowed ourselves to be domesticated centuries ago and yet you humans continue to manipulate. The housewives of years past thought they were being so smart by tossing small bits of dough at their puppies to keep them quiet, sometimes saying “hush puppies.” Not only did those puppies eat to their hearts content of that good, old, delicious Southern cooking, but they also managed to get something named after them. Next time you enjoy some tasty Hush Puppies, just remember dogs can use a little reverse psychology, too.
