A Puppy? And Why Haven’t I Been Consulted?

By Chris Robinson

I’ve been hearing mutterings from The Boss lately that it might be time to start looking for a puppy. Just a goldarn minute here! Hmm, where did that come from? Must have picked it up watching those old John Wayne westerns with The Boss. Or, maybe it was Lee Marvin. Nah, must have been Wayne, couldn’t have been Marvin. Lee Marvin was a former Marine. Fought and seriously wounded on Saipan during WWII. Any expletive he used would have been a lot stronger than “goldarn.” But, I digress. Back to the initial question.

A puppy? Why haven’t I been consulted about this possible major disruption in our lives? After all, I am Bo, the canine kingpin around here, which means I merit being a party to this decision. Of course, being the only canine in this household made assuming the status of top dog pretty easy but still I would expect to get the consideration of being asked before some pesky little “pupper” invades my domain. It’s only right and, what’s more, I’m sure it’s somewhere in my contract with The Boss.

If I give my approval and a puppy is allowed to become part of my life, there are some rules that newcomer is going to have to learn very quickly. Oh, the rules The Boss has are pretty simple and there aren’t many: Be nice to people and their dogs. Don’t pee, poop or throw up on the carpet. Come when you’re called. Don’t pee on the furniture or the Christmas tree and don’t chew on the furniture. Find birds and fetch them. Don’t dig in the rose or the flower gardens. As I said, pretty simple.

My list, however, is much longer and waayyy more complicated. First of all, the newcomer will have to be a boy. I’d much prefer a girl but since The Boss has no interest in dealing with more than one puppy at the time, I’m willing to yield on this point. Besides, given The Boss’ attitude toward puppy-raising, having a girl around would be sheer torture twice a year. So, a boy it will be and likely one of my brother Bart’s kids so at least he’ll be family. Well, every family has its rules and these are mine so pay attention.
