As the old adage goes, hindsight is 20/20; it’s easier to see and analyze situations when we’re looking back on them. I guess we can say that for the first time in history, our vision of 2020 is actually, well, 20/20. So, what did we learn? We saw the bad, the good and the ugly. We saw failure and success. Our sport depends on learning all we can from 2020 and moving forward to ensure a solid future for many years to come. Most important, it depends on us as individuals to make a genuine effort to get back to talking about dogs instead of politics. It’s time to move on for the sake of the sport.
We’ve learned a lot about our friends and neighbors in 2020. We learned about the incredible courage of health care workers, law enforcement professionals, and many other essential and ancillary workers that we may have taken for granted in the past. We learned about humanity and humility. We learned how important family and friends are and, hopefully, we learned something about ourselves.
In the context of dogs, 2020 sure taught us a lot about the sport, and the people and processes that make it work. At our best, we worked together to keep the sport alive in any way we could. We were reminded how comforting it is to have a network of dog show friends during the best and worst of times. Take the Lead did a tremendous job in helping those in need keep current on their health insurance payments. Individuals helped individuals anonymously. There was plenty of good.
Sadly, even with all warnings to the contrary, we also witnessed divisiveness, burnt bridges, broken friendships and hate based on personal and political beliefs that have absolutely nothing to do with dogs or the sport.
