In Virginia, Illinois and New Jersey, 3 regional Irish Terrier Clubs took advantage of the AKC’s new directive that they can hold up to 3 independent specialties a day within parent club guidelines and local restrictions. Masks and temperature checks, hand-sanitizer stations, and “maintain social distance signs” joined pop-up tents, grooming tables and tack boxes as standard equipment for the new era of showing.
Chesapeake Irish Terrier Club
Over Labor Day Weekend, the CITC Outside Cluster led the trend with 4 shows over 2 days at The Kennel at Woodley Meadows in Leesburg, VA. Competitors came from Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Georgia, Indiana, West Virginia, Texas and of course, Virginia. Greeted at the entrance by temperature checks for safety, exhibitors were blessed with glorious weather both days for the outdoor judging.
In each show, as many as 23 Irish lined up in contention for breed honors under judges April Clyde and Todd Clyde the first day, and Al Ferruggiaro and Karen Wilson on the second. Best of Breed winners were spread out: GCHB Breezy’s Charming Con Artist (owner Nina Warren) and GCHB Bravo Red Devil at Shadowland (owners Andrea Bradford & Donna Hills) split the bill Saturday, while CH Rockledge Duke of Dunderry (owners Eduardo Fugiwara & Sean Mansfield) dominated the day on Sunday taking breed in both morning and afternoon shows. Best of Opposite Sex was also split with Rockledge Crimson Callysta (owners Nina Warren & Eduardo Fugiwara & Sean Mansfield) taking honors in both morning shows, and the afternoon nods going to Ceallach Cherry Bomb Fire (owners Kelly Edwards & John A. Childers) and Laochragh’s Wild at Heart (owners Christine Marsh & Ryder & Kelly Marsh & Adam Depobolesa).
On Saturday, both Owner-handler ribbons went to Veteran bitch CH TWI (owners Josh A. Naleway), while Sunday saw Ceallach Fire Voyager (owners Kelly Edwards & John A. Childers) pull off the repeat performance in both.
After spirited competition in Saturday’s Sweepstakes, the nod for Best in Sweeps went to Ceallach Fireworks (owner Matthew Crofut) with Best of Opposite in Sweeps earned by Woodley’s Kiergan on Fire (owner Doug Rapport).
At least 3 Irish finished their Championships. But good news was spread around. With multiple majors in play and multiple new champions rewarded for their performances, the two days in the Old Dominion gave most participants a reason to celebrate. Thanks to Show Chair Angie Meehan and event host Doug Rapport for all their hard work to make the weekend safe, successful and most enjoyable.
