The 144th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on February 9, 10 and 11 had an entry of more than 2,500 dogs in 204 breeds or varieties. We asked the seven group judges and Robert Slay, the Best in Show judge, to talk about their assignments and placements.
Their comments follow:
The Hound Group
The Hound Group was first into the ring at the Garden on Monday night under judge Marjorie Martorella of Millstone Township, New Jersey. “Judging the Hound Group at Westminster was a distinct honor,” she wrote. “The quality in this group is historically very strong and it certainly didn’t disappoint me this year.
“I was looking for dogs who excelled in breed characteristics and could also do the job they were bred to do, as well as having proper coat condition and overall condition. I narrowed my group down to six exemplary representatives of their breeds.”
Her placements were:
Group One:
GCHG Pinnacle Kentucky Bourbon Whippet
Bred by Justin Smithey and Yvonne Sovereign
Owned by Justin Smithey, Dr. Ken Latimer, Judy Descutner, Nancy Shaw, and Cheslie Smithey
“First was awarded to the Whippet. Her gentle curves and beautiful expression were most impressive. She excelled in breed type and moved effortlessly with the long, low reach so important in the breed. She was totally in sync with her handler and together they performed flawlessly.”
Group Two:
CH Hollyrood Cosmopollyton Scottish Deerhound
Bred and owned by Heidi Gervais and Lynne Bruce
“Second was a lovely Scottish Deerhound. She was so light on her feet and moved effortlessly. Her outline was lovely, and she kept it on the move. She was in beautiful condition and shown to perfection.”
